Woodland Green

Philadelphia, PA

The Woodland Green Pedestrian Plaza was designed to replace the concrete expanse of a traffic triangle that served no ecological or social benefits to the neighborhood. The plaza features hand crafted wooden planters made from large reclaimed logs, white oak, and locally salvaged joists. These planters buffer the plaza from city traffic and infuse nature into the site. In addition, they greatly reduce the amount of stormwater runoff that would typically flow into the city’s combined stormwater and sewer lines. Tough, drought tolerant plants such as Switch Grass, Sedum, and Purple Coneflower were selected due to their tolerance of urban environmental stresses.
